What is that sensation when you know you’ve just had a very vivid dream but, for the life of you, you cannot remember any details? You’re left only with a residue. You just experienced something but, even as you are becoming aware of this and try to grasp it, the last whispered edges of its form vanish with the morning and it is gone forever. In my practice I am always pursuing this point of tension that lives somewhere between the sleeping and the waking world. Between opposites. I begin with a blind scribble. And from there, the work maps the conversation, (or argument) that unfolds as I haggle with the material, surface, and image before me. Wings, antlers, arms, half formed faces often show up in the jumble. And if a narrative forms I am careful to keep it open and maintain fluidity of meaning. I am happiest with a piece when it looks like something I recognize but I don't know what exactly - and I can then leave it in a suspended state - becoming and/or dissolving. Oil painting has been my main medium for most of my life but I have recently been working a lot more on paper with charcoal and graphite and water applied by brush. I call this technique, “Water Drawing”. I feel pulled to this method because it lives somewhere between painting and drawing. It is black and white. The ultimate pair of opposites. Opposites attract. Then they repel. And also they come back together and finally intermingle somewhere between recognition and bafflement. I work within this space. Like taking a jumble of puzzle pieces and carefully arranging the parts and then when the image begins to form, I re-scramble the pieces, denying myself the satisfaction of conclusion. The amygdala, an almond-shaped cluster of nuclei located deep within the temporal lobe, is crucial in processing emotions such as fear, anxiety, and pleasure. I think of this as being the brain from the amygdala’s perspective. From deep within the physical structure of our brain, this little bulb is so crucial to bringing joy and pain to our experience of the world, but at the same time cannot experience anything like those things for itself. It is simply a processor. My father was born Harry Shapiro but took his mother’s last name of Jackson when she was finally able to divorce my grandfather due to his extrreme abusiveness and drunkenness. I named this painting thinking of the poetic aptness of hiding something named ‘Jew’ behind a latin name, and the ways, due to this act of solidarity to his mother, my father essentially cut that part of our history from our family tree. I know almost nothing of the Jewish side of my family as a result of this. And although Jackson is not a Latin last name, this act of obscuration alludes to the ways in which family histories are defined by a collection of personal choices.
