In my practice, I continually explore the tension between the sleeping and waking worlds, navigating a space defined by opposites. I begin with a blind scribble, which serves as the starting point for a dialogue—or even an argument—between myself and the materials, surfaces, and images I engage with. My more figurative works often feature wings, antlers, arms, and half-formed faces amidst the chaos. When a narrative emerges, I strive to keep it open-ended, preserving a fluidity of meaning. I find fulfillment in pieces that evoke a sense of recognition, yet remain ambiguous, allowing them to exist in a suspended state of becoming or dissolving. Oil painting and abstraction have been my primary modes for most of my life. Recently, however, I have been experimenting more with paper, using charcoal, graphite, and water applied with a brush. I refer to this technique as “Water Drawing.” This method draws me in because it exists between painting and drawing, characterized by its black-and-white contrast—the ultimate pair of opposites. These opposites attract, repel, and ultimately intermingle in a space between recognition and bafflement. Since participating in the Canopy Program in 2025, my work has shifted towards minimalism and meditative practices, utilizing repeated lines reminiscent of Sol Lewitt and Agnes Martin, alongside interruptions of the materials inspired by Lucio Fontana. Acrylic ink and the act of ripping paper have become common threads in this exploration. I relish the formal possibilities that arise when I allow these processes to guide me. I enjoy oscillating between these various modes of exploration, yet one constant remains: the search for balance, for the ineffable, for something true yet undefinable. I create within this space, akin to assembling a jumble of puzzle pieces. As an image begins to take shape, I deliberately re-scramble the pieces, denying myself the satisfaction of a conclusion. The amygdala, an almond-shaped cluster of nuclei located deep within the temporal lobe, is crucial in processing emotions such as fear, anxiety, and pleasure. I think of this as being the brain from the amygdala’s perspective. From deep within the physical structure of our brain, this little bulb is so crucial to bringing joy and pain to our experience of the world, but at the same time cannot experience anything like those things for itself. It is simply a processor. My father was born Harry Shapiro but took his mother’s last name of Jackson when she was finally able to divorce my grandfather due to his extrreme abusiveness and drunkenness. I named this painting thinking of the poetic aptness of hiding something named ‘Jew’ behind a latin name, and the ways, due to this act of solidarity to his mother, my father essentially cut that part of our history from our family tree. I know almost nothing of the Jewish side of my family as a result of this. And although Jackson is not a Latin last name, this act of obscuration alludes to the ways in which family histories are defined by a collection of personal choices.
